Ontario’s Rachel Homan rink made one of the best shots of the tournament to count three and take a lead that she wouldn’t relinquish in her 9-5 win over Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville in the third versus fourth page playoff game Saturday afternoon at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts at Mosaic Place.

Homan threw a stone with lots of heat behind it for her final shot in nine, facing one McCarville stone. The right connection of ricochets in the house knocked out McCarville’s but kept three of Homan’s in.

The match went from 5-4 McCarville to 7-5 Homan.

“They’re a great team and they played phenomenal today,” Homan said. “They had the upper hand on us the whole game and we tried to tee it up for a big end in 9, and it paid off. Thankfully my team is patient with me and we figured it out in the end.”

The win puts them into the semifinal Sunday morning (11 a.m.) against the team that loses Saturday night’s first versus second page playoff game.

Homan curled at 76 per cent in the match compared to McCarville’s 78. Homan’s third Emma Miskew was an astounding 91 per cent, likely one of the biggest reasons Ontario will move on.

“We’ve shown we can win a couple of different ways this week,” Homan said. “I was a little bit hard on other people’s nerves, I think. It’s great to learn and play another game on Sheet C and it’s great to go on, moving forward with the win.

With her last stone in ten, McCarville tried to hit a raise double take out to sit one, but it didn’t work, giving Homan two more in the tenth for the victory.

Still, the game turned significantly in the ninth end.

“We didn’t get our rocks in the proper spot in the ninth end and it just kept building and building,” McCarville said. “They were sitting three for quite a few rocks in that end and we were just trying to get one sucked in there. After my first one it looked good. When she was going down to call her first shot, I thought I’m liking how she’s calling it, and then Emma (Miskew) changed her mind I thought ‘Nooo, it’s not good’.

“I think if mine curls a hair more, she doesn’t have that.”

Both teams had some very tough shots that were executed well in the match.
