Three goals in the first half and three goals in the second half helped propel the Peacock Tornadoes into the semifinals of the Moose Jaw High School Boys Soccer League.

The Tornadoes shutout the Vanier Vikings, 6-0, in their quarterfinal match-up on Wednesday.

“Honestly, passing was the biggest key for us,” said Peacock captain Jordan McDovell.  “We passed around them, we made really good runs and we scored.”

McDovell led the attack for Peacock with a hat trick from the midfield spot, while Tate Mugsiha scored a pair and Alex Enns also found the back of the net in the win.

Vanier didn’t win a game during league play this season, but Vikings head coach Jaysen Tomashewski said they showed some good progress throughout the year.

“We played fairly well as a team, which we hadn’t done for the past couple of games,” said Tomashewski.  “The biggest bonus for us is we finally pulled together and for the majority of the game we passed the ball, supported the ball and we created offensive opportunities today that we haven’t been able to do for the past couple of games.”

The Vikings played Wednesday’s game without any subs, which has been the case for much of the season.

Tomashewski said that’s something that they’ve had to battle through, but has also helped the team develop.

“These guys are in better condition than they would have been if they had a lot of subs,” he said.  “They got lots of touches on the ball, they got lots of chances to move things around on the field, they got lots of chances to put things from practice into games.”

Vanier’s focus will now turn to regionals next week, while Peacock will turn their attention to their semifinal match-up with the Central Cyclones on Friday.

“I’m confident how we’re playing, we could definitely do well, go all the way and win it,” said McDovell.

“We were a weaker side when we played Central last time and we held it to 2-0, so now we’re ready, now we can score goals and they should be afraid to play us.”

The Tornadoes and Cyclones meet on Friday, while the other semifinal will have the Swift Current Colts battle the Weyburn Eagles on Thursday.  Both games go at the Canada Games Field here in Moose Jaw at 4:30 p.m.
