Local teams put together a solid showing over the weekend as Peacock and Central hosted the 56th annual Moose Jaw Senior Boys Basketball Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The Toilers lost in the final, 81-75, to the Weyburn Eagles, while the Cyclones finished on a win, beating the Melfort Comets, 103-46, in the bronze medal game after falling to Weyburn in the semifinals.

“As coaches, we’re really happy with the boys effort,” said Peacock head coach Dave Roney. “We had three really solid games and we’re quick happy. We fell a little short, they’re disappointed with that, but the games themselves were great learning experiences.”

Peacock went 2-1 during the tournament, winning their opening game, 90-55, over Meadow Lake on Friday before knocking off Melfort, 90-59, in the semifinals on Saturday morning.

The Toilers felt like they were able to accomplish their goals for the weekend in their three games.

“Everything is geared towards March, so every time we play, whether it’s in town here, exhibition or a tournament, it doesn’t matter, it’s about improving each time we go out there and we were able to accomplish that,” said Roney.

The Eagles are a big team and they were able to use that size to their advantage against Peacock and Central, who aren’t small, but don’t feature the size that Weyburn brings to the table.

Roney said going against that competition was good for them.

“We handled it pretty good, we’re tall, but they’ve got some height along with the body size, so it was a good challenge,” he said.

Central head coach Ryan Boughen thought that they were able to handle the test of going against the Eagles’ size well as well.

“We’re not real big, we’re averaged size, so we needed to figure out how we were going to compete with that size and as coaches we thought we competed real well,” said Boughen. “It was a good test for us and we were happy with how it worked out in the size mismatch.”

The Cyclones lost a back-and-forth game, 80-74, to the Eagles in the semifinal, despite having a few leads of their own late in the fourth quarter.

“We had a good battle with Weyburn, they just got some bounces at the end that we didn’t get and they made some shots that we didn’t make,” said Boughen. “We gave up a few baskets in transition that we probably needed to take care of and tighten a few things up on defence.

“Overall, we’re pretty happy with our guys play and the weekend. It was a good weekend for us, a good tournament.”

Peacock (3-1) and Central (3-0) sit in a three-way tie with Vanier (3-1) for first place in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Boys Basketball League.
