The Peacock Toilers opened the 16-team tournament with a 75-28 victory over the Meath Park Mustangs to advance into the championship bracket.

“I feel like we played well, we’ve been working on things like boxing out and just getting back to the basics and we did well,” said Peacock senior Katherine McDougall, who had 17 points in the win for the Toilers.

Over at Central, the Cyclones dropped a 73-42 contest to the Regina Miller Marauders, which dropped them into the consolation bracket. Central will play Yorkton on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Peacock after the Raiders lost 56-43 to the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders in one of the late games.

The Toilers will meet up with the Melfort Comets in the quarterfinals on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

In Thursday’s opener, the Toilers play some stifling defence against the Mustangs, keeping them away from the basket for much of the game.

“I was really happy with that,” said McDougall. “We’ve been working on gap defence and shutting down the drives and we did that well, so we played good defence.”

McDougall made three three-pointers to lead the Toilers in scoring in the win, while Piper Ingalls chipped in with 11 points.  Kennedy Ward also drained three 3s in the win and finished with 13 points.

Meath Park’s Shaelynn Painchaud finished with a team-high nine points in the loss.

Heading into the championship bracket, McDougall said they just want to build off Thursday night’s effort, “We just need to continue playing well as a team, being able to read what each other is doing and working well together to find some nice baskets,” she said.

Teams from around the province are in Moose Jaw for the tournament with games starting back up on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.

“This tournament is awesome every year, we have so much going on, so many teams, so it’s great,” said McDougall.

The tournament wraps up on Saturday with the championship game at 7:30 p.m. The consolation final is at 6 p.m. Saturday.
