A great season ended with a bronze medal at provincials for the Moose Jaw Peewee Mustangs over the weekend in Estevan.

The Mustangs beat the Prince Albert Outlaws, 6-4, in the bronze medal game on Sunday at the Saskatchewan Lacrosse Provincial Championship.

"The boys played hard, they came together as a team and at the end of the day, we were happy with the bronze, it was a little short of the ultimate goal, but we knew provincials would be hard and we're very satisfied coming home with the bronze," said Mustangs coach Jason Hawley.

The bronze medal is added to the haul that the Mustangs have picked up this season as they won the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League title and just last week, they captured gold at the Canada Day Tournament in Calgary.

Hawley said the progress that the team made throughout the year really showed through at provincials.

"We emphasized throughout the year working on strong defence, remaining positive and working on moving around and team work on offence, and the boys definitely came together and showed that throughout the weekend," said Hawley.

The Mustangs posted a 1-0-2 record during the round robin. They opened with a 7-0 win over the Weyburn Thrashers and then battled the Outlaws to a 5-5 tie to open provincials on Friday.

On Saturday, they would settle for another tie, 7-7, against the Saskatoon Quikstix, which got Moose Jaw into the playoff round.

In the semifinals, the Mustangs dropped a 4-1 game to the Regina Outlaws, who would go on to capture the gold medal.

The bronze medal game saw Moose Jaw have to battle back from a 1-0 deficit after the first period and they trailed 2-1 heading into the third period.

Prince Albert scored early in the third to take a two-goal lead, but Colton Ebbett scored his second of the game with 2:54 to play and Josh Johnson found the equalizer with just 20 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Mustangs took over in overtime as Johnson picked up his second of the game early in the frame. Prince Albert answered back three minutes later, but Ebbett's hat trick goal with 1:09 remaining in extra period ended up being the winner. Cashton Seaborg added an empty netter in the final seconds.

Ebbett finished with a hat trick and four points in the win, while Johnson scored twice and was named to the tournament all-star team.

"The last period and overtime in the bronze medal game it all really came to head and we were able to come away with a satisfying victory as a result of them coming together and doing what we'd been preaching throughout the year," said Hawley.

In the Bantam Division, the Moose Jaw Mustangs also had a chance to bring home some hardware, but fell just short, dropping a 13-2 game to the Regina Snipers in the bronze medal game on Sunday.

The Bantam Mustangs went 2-1 in the round robin before dropping a 5-3 game to the Swift Current Rampage in the semifinal.

Ethan Johnson took home a tournament all-star nod as well for the Bantam Mustangs.
