There's a lot of games played by a high school volleyball team over the course of the season when you take into account league play, tournaments and then the provincial playoffs.

To go unbeaten throughout all those games is a pretty incredible feat and that's something that the Caronport Cougars were able to accomplish over the weekend.

The Cougars finished off their unbeaten season with a dominating run through the SHSAA 4A Girls Volleyball Provincial Championship tournament on the weekend in Rosetown, topping Watrous in straight sets (25-23, 25-9) in the final.

“It's pretty exciting overall,” said head coach Derek Zacharias. “(A perfect season) isn't something that you plan for or put in as your goals for the year, but we're really blessed and fortunate that's the way that the season went for us.”

Caronport didn't drop a set during provincials, but they trailed in the first set of the final against Watrous, going down 18-14 before rallying for the win. Grade 12 star Emily Koshinsky took over in the second set, scoring 15 straight points off serves to lead to the lopsided win.

“Emily was just dominant from the serving line, she was able to locate her serves to good places, kept Watrous out of system in that second set that they weren't able to attack the way that they wanted to and that made it easy for us to transition back and attack,” said Zacharias. “It was really strong serving on our side that made the difference in that second set.”

Koshinsky was one of two provincial level players on the Cougars that paced their attack this season. She was a two-time winner of the Saskatchewan Volleyball's 16U female player of the year, while setter Jess Zacharias was the 2015 winner of that same award.

However, the Cougars didn't rely solely on those two players and it was a full team effort that led to their phenomenal success throughout the season.

“We had a focus from the beginning,” said Zacharias. “We have a core group of really experienced players and then we had some players that haven't been around the game as much, so we just came in with a commitment of working together on improving every time we stepped into the gym.

“We never looked too far ahead and just wanted to be committed to the process that we trained and things just worked out really well.”

They will lose six players from this year's team, but Zacharias is confident that they will be able to put together another strong team next season.

“Our focus going into next year will be very similar, we'll look at the athletes that we have and say here's the focus points of where we want to get better and each week and each month that we move forward we'll keep the focus on our process and let the wins and losses take care of themselves.”

The Cougars won the Moose Jaw league championship, all six tournaments that they entered, their conference title, regional title and provincial title over the course of the season.
