When Moose Jaw's Chantz Petruic went to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Yorkton Terriers a couple of years ago, he went with a chip on his shoulder.

If all goes well this year, he may be leaving Yorkton with a scoring title by the end of the season.

Petruic has a nine point lead on the rest of the SJHL heading into tonight.

“When I came in as an 18-year-old after my first year of junior, obviously my confidence wasn’t high,” he said. “I didn’t have the career I wanted here in my home town.”

Petruic scored four assists in 2016-17 with the Moose Jaw Warriors and the following September was cut loose by the Warriors. He joined with the Terriers team holding his SJHL rights and the fit was immediate.

“I kind of had a lot to prove and wanted to prove a lot of people wrong. I kind of came here with a chip on my shoulder and just wanted to be the go-to guy and show everyone that I did have some skill and I could play. Obviously now I want to leave here after my 20-year-old year here with a championship,” Petruic said.

He is leading the SJHL's scoring race by nine points, but he gives a lot of credit to his linemates.

“I wouldn’t be doing that without them,” he said. “They give me the puck a lot, burying some of my passes. Our coach is awesome, too. He’s put me in a lot of great positions and he’s giving me a lot of opportunity to succeed and it’s been great.”

Petruic and the Terriers are in Flin Flon for a pair of games this weekend. They have a lot of road games in the next few weeks but are on a tear as of late, going 6-0-1 in their last seven games, and they have a six point lead in their division over the Weyburn Red Wings.

“You dont’ try to worry so much about personal stats,” he said of his 43 points. “You kind of just worry about getting some wins for the team and getting the two points. It’s nice to get on the scoreboard, but at the end of the day it’s just the two points… and obviously fighting for a better playoff position.”
