The Prairie Hockey Academy swept their two games over the weekend to advance into the semifinals of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League's Midget Varsity Championship in Penticton, B.C.

PHA opened the tournament with a 3-2 overtime win against the Okanagan Hockey Academy on Saturday and then rolled to a big 11-1 win over the Pursuit of Excellence Academy on Sunday.

The Cougars will now play in the semifinals coming up on Tuesday. They will meet the winner of Monday's quarterfinals.

PHA 3 OHA 2 (OT)

Tanner Funk scored with 2:14 left in overtime to lift the Cougars to a 3-2 overtime win over OHA in their opening round-robin game.

The back-and-forth game saw the two sides sit scoreless after one and then trade goals in the second and third periods.

OHA opened the scoring with a goal from Ryan Polvere 4:32 into the second period and PHA was able to answer with a power-play goal from Noah Schindel with 4:39 left in the period.

In the third, PHA took their first lead the game when Alec Nieman scored just 3:01 into the frame. OHA’s EuiJun Kim answered only 3:20 later to tie the game at 2-2 after regulation.

PHA outshot OHA, 43-34, with goalie Ryley Gross making 32 saves in the win.

PHA 11 POE 1

After a close game to open the tournament, the Cougars didn't leave anything to chance in their second round-robin game on Sunday, rolling to an 11-1 win over the Pursuit of Excellence.

PHA's top line, which occupied the top-three spots in the regular season scoring race, powered the Cougars to the win, Noah Wills had two goals and seven points in the win, while Jaedon Little picked up three goals and six points, and Keagon Little added two goals and six points.

Kolby Kaban finished with a goal and three points, while captain Colton Aikens also had a goal and two points. Schindel and Josh Prebushewski also scored in the win.

Josh Warkentin made 33 saves in the win for the Cougars as PHA outshot POE 40-34.
