Brayden Point and Team Canada have gotten off to a strong start at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.

They cruised through the opening weekend with a 2-0 record, beating Slovakia 8-0 on Boxing Day and blanking Germany 4-0 on Saturday before getting Sunday off from game action.

The Moose Jaw Warriors captain posted a goal and an assist in the win over Slovakia and said he’s happy with how he’s started the tournament, while fighting for ice time.

“I feel comfortable when I’m on the ice, but we’re having a lot of team success and that’s the most important thing,” said Point, who had 44 points in 28 games with Moose Jaw before leaving for the World Juniors.

“There was some nerves for sure, but once I got on the ice a couple of times, I started to feel more comfortable and started to play my game.”

The opening game saw Point’s ice time increase throughout the contest with him taking a regular shift on the third line in the third period.  He scored his goal in the second period on a nice feed from Portland’s Nic Petan.

“It was a pretty cool feeling,” Point said on scoring at the World Juniors.  “You watch the World Juniors growing up, so being able to score one was a pretty cool thing.

“It’s been really cool playing in front of Canada, so it’s been an awesome experience.”

Point has been listed as Canada’s 13th forward heading into both of their games so far.  He said he isn’t worried about his ice time and is just focused on going full out each shift.

“There’s a lot of good players on this team, so when I get thrown out there, I’m just going to try to keep doing my best and help make a positive impact on the team,” said Point.

“When it’s the World Juniors and there’s a gold medal on the line, it’s not hard to watch other guys that’s for sure.”

Canada’s first two games served as a warm-up for what’s ahead this week as they will now take on Finland, the defending gold medallists, on Monday and then after another day-off, they have a date with the United States on Boxing Day.

Point felt the team accomplished what they wanted to over the opening two games and are now focused on building off that going forward in the tournament.

“We’re a pretty solid team, we’re not giving up a lot of chances against and we seem to finish on the ones that we get,” he said.

“Slovakia was a tough team, they came back and beat Finland, so they weren’t really the easiest games, but it’s good to get some confidence going into the ones that we have coming up.”

Canada has had a day to prepare for Finland and Point said the team remains confident going into their third round robin game.

“We’ve watched some video on the last couple of games and there’s some small things that we can clean up, but I don’t think much is going to change,” he said.  “We’re getting stronger and every time you play the game there’s some things you can learn, so we’ll hopefully have a good one against Finland and keep it rolling going forward.”

Finland is sitting a 0-0-1-1 after their first two games of the tournament.  They opened with a 2-1 shootout loss to the US and then were shocked by Slovakia in another 2-1 loss.

Canada and Finland hit the ice at 7:00pm on Monday night from the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Other games on Monday will see the United States face Slovakia at 3:00pm in Group A, while the Czech Republic takes on Denmark at 12:00pm and Russia battles Sweden at 4:00pm in Toronto for Group B action.
