Brayden Point and Team Canada had to work to get past co-host Germany in the quarterfinals of the 2017 IIHF World Championship on Thursday.

Canada skated to a narrow 2-1 win in front of a sell-out crowd in Cologne, Germany to advance into the semifinals.

Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele and Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner scored in the win as Canada built up a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes, but Germany’s Yannic Seidenberg cut the lead to one late in regulation.

Scheifele finished with two points for Canada, while Point was held off the score sheet.

Canada out-shot Germany 50-20 in the win.

The Canadians will now face Russia in the semifinals on Saturday after the Russians skated to a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic in their quarterfinal match-up.

The other semifinal will have Finland, who beat the United States 2-0 on Thursday, squaring off with Sweden after they beat Switzerland 3-1 in the quarters.

The Gold Medal Game goes on Sunday in Paris.
