Brayden Point is on the verge of moving up the Moose Jaw Warrior record books again.

The Warriors' 19-year-old captain currently sits third all-time in franchise history in goals scored with 120, but with three more goals, he will pass the high scoring Chad Hinz.

Point scored once on the Warriors' recent four-game Central Division road trip, giving him 21 on the year and putting him within striking distance of Hinz heading into a three-in-three this coming weekend.

“I'm very happy that I've been able to do that here in Moose Jaw,” said Point on Monday. “Looking back, I'm sure in the future this accomplishment will be pretty cool to look back on.”

The Calgary native still has a long way to go to catch former Calgary Flames' star Theoren Fleury, who tops the list with 201 goals in his WHL career.

Point said he never even thought about accomplishing something like this when he joined the team as a 15-year-old.

“I was just trying to get on the ice when I was 15, I didn't expect it, but it's been good,” said Point. “Moose Jaw has given me a ton of opportunity, so I'm very thankful for that.”

Warriors Fine Tuning

The Warriors were back on the ice at Mosaic Place on Monday afternoon for practice with many veterans getting the day off after playing four games in five nights last week.

Moose Jaw was able to collect three out of four points on the weekend to end the trip after dropping the first two games in Edmonton and Red Deer.

“We played pretty well, we fell asleep a little bit in Edmonton, but other than that we played pretty well,” said Point.

The playoff race is getting tight around the Western Hockey League and the Warriors remain right in the thick of things in the East Division, trailing Prince Albert by just two points for second.

Point said this past week was a good taste of what the team can expect down the stretch and into the playoffs.

“We went against three of the top teams in the league and that's how playoffs is going to be, those type of atmospheres and that type of competition, so it was a good experience for us,” said Point.

After posting a 1-2-1 record in the four games in Alberta, Point said there was plenty of good and some things that need to be cleaned up over their week of practice.

“We worked hard, we competed really hard and we kept it simple, we weren't trying to be too fancy, which is something that we try to do sometimes,” he said. “D zone coverage is something that we continue to work on and will this week.”

The Warriors are back on the ice on Friday when they head to Medicine Hat to square off with the Tigers. Moose Jaw then welcomes in the Prince George Cougars on Saturday before the Tigers come to town on Sunday afternoon.

Point Lends Advice

Moose Jaw will have three players missing from practice this week with Brett Howden, Noah Gregor and Zach Sawchenko leaving on Tuesday for the CHL Top Prospects Game in Vancouver.

Point played in the game just two years ago and he said his advice to the players was simple.

“Just have fun, enjoy it and try to seize that moment,” he said. “It's just one game to try to showcase your talents, so work hard, but the biggest thing is just to enjoy it.

“It's cool to face the competition in your draft class in the CHL, it's a lot of fun to play with those guys and compete against them. All the NHL scouts are there watching, so it's a good time for them and hopefully they enjoy it.”

The Top Prospects Game goes on Thursday.
