The Moose Jaw Prairie Dogs came away with a third place finish over the weekend at the Humboldt Mosquito AAA Baseball Tournament.

Moose Jaw’s only loss came in the semifinal as they fell 11-5 to the Saskatoon AAA Super A’s, but they bounced back in the third place game with a 13-12 extra inning win over the Saskatoon AAA Astros.

Owen Varjassy drove in the winning run for the Prairie Dogs in the third place game, while Kaison Skeoch and Brogan Bowes were strong on the mound in the win.

The Prairie Dogs opened the tournament with a 17-7 win over the Saskatoon AAA Cardinals on Friday afternoon.

Moose Jaw then beat the Astros 12-11 and the Saskatoon AAA Braves 10-7 to finish the round robin at 3-0.

The Prairie Dogs return to league play on Thursday when they travel to take on the White Butte Black Broncos. Their next home action is on Saturday night when they host the Regina Buffaloes under the lights at Memorial Field, first pitch is at 8 p.m.

Canucks Swept in Saskatoon

The Moose Jaw Canucks didn’t have the luck that they were looking for on Saturday in the Bridge City.

Moose Jaw dropped a pair of games to the Saskatoon Blue Jays, falling 8-0 and 7-1, in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League’s Midget AA Division.

The first game saw the Canucks limited to just five hits, two of them came off the bat of Riley Skarbon.

Chayce Vanthuyne allowed four runs — two earned on five hits and a walk over three innings. He struck out four to help his cause.

Riley Gross finished the final three innings, surrendering four runs — only one earned. He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out four.

The second game saw the Canucks fall behind 3-0 in the first inning and 4-0 after two.

Skarbon had an RBI-single in the seventh inning to avoid being no-hit by Blue Jays pitcher Harrison W. 

Ryan Zerff got the start for Moose Jaw, allowing seven runs — five earned — on six hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings. He also struck out seven in the loss.

Quincy Johnson finished off the final 2/3 of an inning for the Canucks.

Moose Jaw is back on the field on Wednesday when they host the White Butte Broncos at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 7 p.m.

Regals Fall to Devils Saturday

The Moose Jaw Regals dropped a 5-1 game to the Regina Devils on Saturday night at Ross Wells Park.

The loss puts Moose Jaw’s record at 2-5 on the year in the Regina Optimist Junior Baseball League.

Catcher Jordan Logan scored the Regals’ lone run of the game on an RBI double from infielder Kaleb Wilson in the sixth inning of the loss.

Chris Cooper got the start for the Regals, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks in 6+ innings of work. He struck out a pair in the loss.

Tanner Fritzke finished the seventh inning for Moose Jaw and was tagged for two runs on two hits and six walks. He struck out two as well.

The Regals are off now until June 27 when they host the Regina Pirates at Ross Wells Park.

Millers Rolling into Playoffs

The Moose Jaw Major AAA Millers headed into the playoffs with a big win after beating the Regina Athletics, 15-5, on Friday in North Regina Little League action.

Moose Jaw finished the regular season with a 10-4 record, which put them second in the division. They will open the playoffs in Regina on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. 

The Minor AAA Astros will face the Regina Mariners on Tuesday night to open their playoffs.
