Saskatchewan’s first Hockey Canada Sports School will finally see it’s first on ice action over the next couple of days.

The Prairie Hockey Academy in Caronport is hosting their Midget Showcase camp on Thursday and Friday at the Barkman Arena as they look to select the team that will be hitting the ice starting in the fall.

“We’re excited about it because it’s going to change the landscape of hockey in Saskatchewan with this being the first Hockey Canada Sports School in Saskatchewan,” said Scott Simpkins, media director with P.H.A.

The camp will see players split up into two teams for the on-ice sessions. They will have practices to start the camp and then the first scrimmage will be held on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.

“The players will be mostly from Saskatchewan, it’s looking good,” said Simpkins.

Part of the program that P.H.A will be offering is the full student-athlete experience with Caronport High School playing a big part in that. The players attending the camp will get a chance to see what the school has to offer as well as what the plan is for the program on the ice.

“They’ll have some off-ice leadership development, they’ll have an opportunity to turn the campus and meet some of the people that are going to be involved,” said Simpkins.

“There will be some of the administration staff there to meet the players, they’ll be able to tour the entire campus, we’ll be feeding the players in the cafeteria, so there will be a chance to sample food and even see the dorms. The great thing about Caronport is they have a great high school and everything is within a baseball throw.”

The camp will wrap-up on Friday with some more practices and another scrimmage.

The team will begin playing in the fall, taking part in exhibition games and tournaments throughout the year with the Canadian Sport School Hockey League, which features teams from across Western Canada and the United States.

A coaching staff for the midget and bantam teams that will make up the P.H.A. in year one haven’t been announced yet, but Simpkins added that they’re getting close to putting them in place.

The Bantam Showcase camp will be held May 4-6. Check out prairiehockey.ca for more information.
