The Saskatchewan Roughriders completed a busy trade deadline day by trading away their leading rusher.

Running back Jerome Messam was traded to the Calgary Stampeders in exchange for a package that included national kicker Tyler Crapigna.

Messam was second leading rusher in the Canadian Football League with 826 yards so far this season.

He was scheduled to become a free agent in February.

Also heading to Calgary in the deal is the 2016 fifth round pick that the Riders acquired earlier in the day on Wednesday from Montreal in the deal that sent veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn to the Alouettes.

In addition to Crapigna, the Riders will also receive a third round pick in the 2016 CFL Draft, and the rights to a negotiation list player.

Crapigna was originally a fifth round pick of the Stampeders in the 2014 CFL Draft. He's the CIS all-time leader in field goals with 84.

The Riders are on a bye week this week, they'll return to the field next Saturday against the Edmonton Eskimos.
