Over 40 players suited it up during the Moose Jaw Warriors' rookie camp.

With that many players on the ice, if you want to stand-out, you need to make a statement and that's exactly what Moe Hakim and Cameron Sterling were able to do on Thursday and Friday.

The two forwards put together a pair of strong scrimmages for Team White that they hope will propel them forward into the team's main camp.

“I showed them my compete level and my speed. I showed them what I can do,” said Hakim, who had a few assists during Team White's two scrimmages.

Hakim really made a statement on Friday morning when he didn't back down from the much bigger Dylan Nevil and dropped the gloves for a rare rookie camp fight.

The five-foot-eight Hakim held his own against the six-foot Nevil and was able to show the coaches that compete level that he prides himself in.

“It just happened, but it was fun,” said Hakim on the fight. “I don't really back down from stuff like that, if a guy wants to go, let it happen.”

Hakim had 12 goals and 27 points in 29 games last season playing for the OHA Edmonton Bantam Prep squad. He comes to Warriors' camp on an invite after going undrafted in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.

In both scrimmages, Hakim was winning battles below the goal line and impressing those around Mosaic Place.

“I worked hard and put my best out there, so if I can make it to main camp, it would be a great experience to learn, soak everything up from all the vets,” he said.

Sterling scored in both scrimmages for Team White and really performed well while playing on a line with Hakim.

“I thought I played well, worked hard and really showed my ability to get the puck in the net and also use my body,” he said.

The Calgary product was listed by the Warriors earlier this year after an impressive season with the Calgary Blackhawks at the Minor Midget AAA level. He posted 28 goals and 63 points in 36 games.

He was able to show that scoring touch during rookie camp, but he said he felt it was important that he showed other aspects of his game as well.

“I'm really physical and I like to take the body more and get body position on a lot of people and that's what I take pride in,” said Sterling, who stands in just under six-feet and 182 pounds.

Coming into his first camp with the Warriors, Sterling said he's impressed with how the organization is run.

“I love the whole organization, they have everything set up perfectly, I like how many games we play, it gives me a good opportunity to show my strengths,” he said.

Both players are hopeful that they'll be sticking around for the weekend's action. The Warriors made their first round of cuts after wrapping up rookie camp on Friday.

Main camp opens on Saturday with a pair of scrimmages at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and then continues on Sunday with another scrimmage at 10 a.m.

The annual Black and White Intersquad Game goes on Sunday at 4 p.m. with admission by donation to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
