Some big news for Mark Matthews and the Saskatchewan Rush on Tuesday.

Matthews has been named the National Lacrosse League's Most Valuable Player for the first time in his career after posting a record-setting season with the Rush.

"It's an honour to be named the MVP of the league and I just want to thank all the guys on our team, obviously we had a great year, capped it off with a championship and that's really all that matters for our group," stated Matthews in a video on NLLTV.com.

Matthews set a league record with 84 assists during the 2018 NLL season as he led the league with 116 points, which gave him his first scoring title.

This is the first time a Rush player has ever won the MVP award.

Matthews was originally drafted by the Edmonton Rush with the first overall pick in the 2012 NLL Draft. He has 234 goals and 600 points in 106 games with the Rush organization.

Rush head coach Derek Keenan was named the NLL Coach of the Year last week.
