Scott Schultz looks on during the 2011 edition of his football camp.

It’s become an annual spring tradition in Moose Jaw, but now the Scott Schultz Football Camp is moving into the winter months to give players ahead start on next football season.

“Just when the kids are getting that itch for football and they’re winding down, we can provide them with something right smack dab in the middle of winter and be the first camp out there for these guys,” said Scott Schultz, a former Saskatchewan Roughriders star and Moose Jaw native.

The camp is heading into it’s ninth year in the Friendly City and will be moving inside for 2013 with all the sessions being held at the Moose Jaw Field House.  “We wanted to make the best use of the fine facility that Moose Jaw has to offer and we wanted to get indoors and take the weather out of being a factor,” explained Schultz.

All high school aged football players can sign up for the camp, which is being held February 16th and 17th.  “We go with upwards of about 80 players and the kids can go on ScottSchultzFootball.com and see what the breakdown is by position,” said Schultz.

As always, the players will be getting some high end coaching with many current and former Riders coming out to help at each position.

“It’s a full contact camp and we break it into the positions, so each position has a specific coach,” said Schultz.  “We teach everything, the basics and all the way to full contact tackling.  The big thing is the coaches are able to break the kids down and work on some of the more intricate stuff that they might not get at the high school level.”

The camp has grown every year since Schultz started it in 2004 and Schultz says hoping to see further growth with this year’s changes, “It’s been great and it’s been something that we’ve always take great pride in being able to put an event out there for kids because I can remember being in high school in Moose Jaw and my parents allowing me to go anywhere and everywhere for a camp, up to Saskatoon and down into the States, just to try to get some learning in and for us to do it and make it real affordable, couldn’t be prouder.”

Schultz played for nine seasons with the Roughriders, he finished his tenure with 178 tackles and 35 sacks.  He played his high school football at Riverview Collegiate in Moose Jaw.
