The 2020 Scotties Final at Mosaic Place did end up have having a winner from Saskatchewan.

Val Sweeting, who was born in Redvers and grew up in Maryfield, is the third on Kerri Einarson's Manitoba rink.

“It feels so good,” Sweeting said. “Those two back to back Canadian final losses are tough, and then you have the mixed doubles trials in there too, and then a couple provincial final losses. So it was heartbreaking for sure. I didn’t know how many times you can get back up, but it just shows that you just have to. And I’m so honoured to get that maple leaf.”

Sweeting lost the final in 2015 at Mosaic Place as a skip for Alberta and lost one more time before being able to win this year.

“It’s just an honour to be team Canada,” Sweeting said. “I’ve had quite a few heartbreaking Canadian final losses, so I definitely needed that. Got back to the final and the team played really well.”

Sweeting now lives in Alberta but still curls in the major events with the Einarson team. But she still has family in the southeastern part of Saskatchewan.

“I know I have Manitoba on my back this week, but I’m fortunate to have lived in some different areas with lots of support,” she said. “I know Maryfield, Saskatchewan, Vegreville (Alberta) and I’ve kind of been all over, were all supporting us as well as Manitoba and everybody back there. Although I had the Manitoba logo on, I felt like I was kind of representing everybody and I felt that support from everybody.”

Sweeting said she is looking forward to playing in the worlds at home. They go March 14-22 in Prince George.
