Ten teams hit the court around Southern Saskatchewan on Wednesday night as the Moose Jaw High School Senior Basketball League returned from the holiday break for the first games of 2017.

There was five games on the schedule for the night with three going in the boys division and two in the girls.

Peacock Rolls in Return

The Peacock Toilers scored a 90-57 win over the Riverview/Cornerstone Falcons in senior boys action.

Luke Dombowsky led the Toilers with 21 points in the win, while Jett Kowalchuk chipped in with 20. On the Falcons’ side, Kaleb Seida had a team-high 18 points in the loss.

With the win, the Toilers improve to 3-1 on the year, while the Falcons’ record drops to 1-2.

Both teams will be back on the court next Wednesday when Peacock hosts Central and Riverview/Cornerstone welcomes Vanier.

Cyclones Sweep Trip to Caronport

Out in Caronport on Wednesday night, the Central Cyclone boys and girls both kicked off the new year with wins.

The Cyclone boys rolled to an 86-57 win over the Caronport Cougars to remain undefeated on the year. Cody Moore led the charge for Central with 18 points in the win, while Matt Adkins had a game-high 20 points in the loss for Caronport.

The win allows Central (3-0) to stay tied with Peacock for first place in the boys division with six points. Caronport falls to 0-4 with the loss.

In the girls game, the Cyclones picked up a 52-29 win over the Cougars.

Rae Whitehead led all scorers with 18 points in the win for Central, while Ashlyn Jesse added eight points. Amaris Burghardt was Caronport’s top scorer with nine points in the loss.

The Cyclones now sit at 2-1 on the year, while Caronport falls to 0-3.

Both Caronport and Central will be back on the court next Tuesday when the Cyclones head over to Peacock for a rivalry doubleheader, while Caronport travels down to Assiniboia for a doubleheader against the Rockets.

Vanier Wins Pair in Assiniboia

The Rockets hosted the Vanier Vikings and Spirits on Wednesday night for a pair of tightly played games to open 2017.

The Vikings scored a hard fought 85-70 win over the Rockets in the boys game as Ronald Nyekowat poured in a game-high 29 points in the win.

Kody Morales added 16 points for Vanier, while Logan Fettes had a 20-point night for the Rockets in the loss.

The win keeps Vanier (3-1) in the race for first place with Peacock and Central as all three schools sit tied with six points. Assiniboia drops to 1-3 with the loss.

In the girls game, the Spirits held off a late charge from the Rockets to walk away with an 80-71 win.

Alexis Jones poured in 21 points for Vanier in the win, while Annah McDonald added 20 for the Spirits. Kacey Coghill had a game-high 22 points for Assiniboia.

Vanier improves to 3-1 with the win, moving into a tie for first place with Peacock, while Assiniboia is still looking for its first win at 0-3.

The Vanier boys will be back on the court next Tuesday when they face the Riverview/Cornerstone Falcons. Their girls have next week off.
