The Moose Jaw High School Senior Basketball League will be well represented at Hoopla next weekend.

There will be seven teams from the local league heading to Prince Albert for the provincial basketball tournament after strong showings this past weekend during the regional championships.

Three out of the four teams in the 4A boys bracket at Hoopla will be from Moose Jaw after the Central Cyclones, Peacock Toilers and Vanier Vikings all secured their spots with wins over the weekend.

The Cyclones entered regionals as the top ranked team in the 4A boys classification and they rolled in the regional final on their home court, beating Saskatoon Bedford Road, 99-59, on Saturday.

“We got here with hard work and defence, we really strive to play good defence because if we play good defence, that leads to easy buckets and good offence,” said Central’s Gurav Changar, who is the lone senior on the Cyclones.

Central won their third straight city championship earlier in the week in an overtime thriller against Peacock. Changar said that they learned from that game.

“We played a lot better in this game, shot the ball better, played better defence and just learned from what happened in the city final game to build on it,” he said.

We will get a rematch of that city final game in the provincial semifinal as Central will face Peacock coming up on Friday at Hoopla.

The fourth ranked Toilers won the regional tournament on their home court, beating the Melfort Comets, 59-51, in a hard fought game.

Peacock senior Payton Chow said it was a solid bounce back performance after falling in the city final.

“We knew this wasn't going to be easy and we just had to bounce back and that’s what we did,” he said. “We were really good on the defensive rebounds today and that's what won it for us.”

The Vikings were the sixth ranked team heading into regionals. They won 101-56 over Notre Dame on Friday to advance into the regional final and then they upended third ranked Meadow Lake, 56-54, on Saturday to secure their spot at Hoopla.

Vanier will have a date with the second ranked Weyburn Eagles in the provincial semifinal on Friday.

Two Moose Jaw teams were able to advance to Hoopla in the 4A girls division.

The second place Peacock Toilers had a bye into the regional final on their home court on Saturday and they advanced with a 76-38 win over Humboldt.

“We're really excited,” said Peacock’s Piper Ingalls. “I thought we played pretty good in the second half and we started rolling.”

Peacock and Humboldt were actually tied 18-18 after the first quarter, but the Toilers exploded for 31 points in the second quarter to take a 49-24 lead at halftime.

“We got some stops and started playing great defensively, which led to us scoring more,” said Ingalls, who added that the team is very confident about where their game is at heading into provincials.

Peacock will meet third ranked Estevan in the provincial semifinal on Friday.

The fourth ranked Cyclones cruised into Hoopla with a dominating 78-19 win over North Battleford John Paul II in the regional final on Saturday.

After losing to Peacock in the city final, Cyclones grade 11 Kirstie Johnstone said that they're very happy with their performance this weekend.

“Our key coming into this game was to execute and get things done and we definitely did that,” she said. “We wanted to run the floor, get the ball moving and we got it done.”

Central will have a tough test, going up against the top ranked Melfort Comets in the provincial semifinal coming up on Friday at Hoopla.

The Vanier Spirits lost in the regional semifinal this past Friday, falling 48-47 to Warman to end their season.

The Cougars are the third ranked team in the division and they will meet up second ranked Lumsden in the provincial semifinal at Hoopla.
