The Moose Jaw Ice U12 A girls fastball team had a busy weekend with a pair of doubleheaders on the go.

They split Saturday against the Southern Storm and won both games against the Lumsden Cubs Sunday.

U12 A Ice head coach Rick Adrian said it was a difficult off-season not knowing if there would be a ball season this year.

"It was really hard (just) hoping," he said. "Spending two or three months wondering and hoping and trying to keep ourselves motivated and interested. Never mind trying to get 11- and 12-year-olds interested. Still wanting to go outside and play catch."

But once the province allowed outdoor activities like ball, it's been a great time for the team and the coaches, thankful to get the chance to play. Given the teams have a busy house league season combined with weekend Ice games, it's been a hectic period of the year after months of inaction at the league level.

"We've had parents coming to me and telling me that the kids told them they weren't allowed to go camping," Adrian said. "They want to be here. They absolutely love it. If I had two more games lined up tonight, they probably wouldn't complain in the slightest."

Sunday, Tara Bell hit a grand slam to pace the Ice to their first win of the day 13-4. On the mound, Marisa Montgomery, Kiarra Adrian and Avery Garthus combined to allow only four runs on the mound.

In the second game, Montgomery, Adrian, Garthus and Zoey Chesney combined on the mound, while Garthus and Taya Molde had two RBI each. The Ice scored five in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Saturday, they split a pair against the Storm, winning 3-1 and losing 6-4.

The U12 B team won two of their own over Lumsden as well, 20-6 and 15-11. In the first game, the Ice scored five runs in each of the first four innings = scoring every run they could with only one out recorded - before the mercy rule was enforced. They'll be playing a doubleheader with the Regina Saints Tuesday at Optimist Park.

Also Saturday at Optimist Park, the U16 Ice won a pair of blowouts, 20-0 and 20-8 over Carlyle Saturday. Sunday they won one over the Lumsden Cubs 10-0 and tied the last one 7-7.

Taylor Luciak struck out 15 in the first game Sunday for the Ice and Malea Kletzel scored three runs. In the second game, Makenna Simmons and Kletzel were both 3-for-4 at the plate, and starting pitcher Kalena Adrian struck out 14 in the game.
