The Saskatchewan Soccer Association will be allowing their officials to work high school games this season after an agreement was reached with the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association on Wednesday morning.

"SHSAA is thankful for the continued work on this issue by SSA. We look forward to pooling resources and we are excited that Saskatchewan students will continue their school sport experience in soccer," stated SHSAA Executive Director Lyle McKellar in a joint media release with the SSA.

News broke on Tuesday night that Moose Jaw Soccerfest wouldn’t be going ahead this weekend due to a lack of officials after the SSA barred their officials from working high school games this season. Soccerfest will remain canceled despite the agreement by the two sides.

"After deliberation with most of the teams invited to Moose Jaw Soccerfest 2018, it has been decided that the final decision is to have the tournament remained canceled," stated Scott Wicker, Moose Jaw high school girls soccer commissioner, in a media release on Wednesday afternoon. "It was decided that it would be much too difficult to organize the teams and run an effective tournament. It is disappointing that Soccerfest has been canceled but the dispute between SSA and SHSAA, although resolved, left us with little choice. At least now we can get back to our local league play and concentrate on training and guiding our athletes on the field again."

Wednesday’s agreement provides sanctioning of SHSAA games and allows everything to return to normal for the 2018 season here in Moose Jaw and around the province.

“We are grateful for the positive discussions with SHSAA and with both sides refocussed on ensuring a positive game time environment for all participants, we look forward to continued discussions going forward,” stated Doug Peterson, SSA Executive Director.

The next high school soccer action is coming up on Thursday when the Peacock Tornadoes boys and girls will host the Weyburn Eagles (4:30 p.m.) at Smith and Sunningdale Fields.
