Thanks to gravity and ingenuity, soap box cars will be roaring down Alder Avenue Sunday as a part of Moose Jaw's annual Soap Box Derby.

The event, which starts at 10 a.m. Sunday, is run by the local district soap box association, which also includes Regina.

Spectators are welcome for the event has delighted spectators in Moose Jaw for over 30 years.

Marcus Hovington with the association, says racers go from ages 5 to 6 to the maximum age of 18:

“They’ve got a junior class and a senior class,” he said. “And these kids get going really fast actually for what they are. They get up to 65 miles an hour in a little wooden car, so it’s really entertaining to watch.”

There will be between 30-40 racers in town for the weekend, plus their families. The local association also hosts a barbecue for the out of town drivers.

“It’s going to be a fun weekend,” Hovington said. “We’ll have food on site. It’s open to all ages, all the public. We’ll be racing all day Sunday, starting at 10 in the morning and usually going until 4 or 5 in the afternoon."

“It’ll be a busy day of race after race after race.”
