Peacock takes on Prince Albert St Mary's in earlier Soccerfest action.

Soccerfest 2012 was another successful year for the local high school tournament that has grown into the biggest in the province with 16 teams taking part.

“Huge success,” said Sandi Hutchinson, tournament commissioner and Peacock head coach.  “It’s always great every week because the coaches and teams come in and they’re all very positive and they really appreciate the job that the Moose Jaw coaches and teams do in putting on the tournament.

“There’s lots of strong soccer teams here, lots of very talented players from across the province and I guess what we can take out of it is that we go in and have an opportunity that have had to play together for a while.  They pass, they can score and they can move the ball up and down the field.”

Regina LeBoldus won for the second straight year, beating Swift Current, 3-1, in a rematch of last year’s final on Saturday afternoon.

Peacock finished second on the “C” side after beating Central, 2-1, in the semifinal and then losing, 8-0, to Weyburn in the final.  Central won the “C” side consolation game, 6-5 over Lloydminster Holy Rosary, to finish third in the pool.

“Our team plays well together and they took the opportunity to watch some of these bigger teams play, so whenever you can do that where you get in and can play and watch these teams go at it, you can always improve,” said Hutchinson.

Vanier beat Balgonie Green 3-2 on penalty kicks in the “D” side semifinal, but fell to Prince Albert St. Mary’s 2 in the final to finish second in the pool.

Next high school girls soccer action is coming up on Tuesday when Central hosts Swift Current and Peacock takes on Vanier.  Both games go at Sunningdale Field at 4:30pm.
