Despite starting two months later than expected, the Moose Jaw Minor Girls Softball league is scheduled to begin this coming Monday, July 6th.

Craig Hemingway, President of the league's board says, that the registration is somewhat lower than usual.

"Our numbers are down from a typical season due to a number of reasons. Covid-19 and safety concerns being among them of course, but also the fact that it's summertime now and people have other things planned. But we ended up with about 190 registrations so that allows us to still have a few teams in each division. So we're ready to do for what we hope is only a once in a lifetime experience of having the league during July and August."

Those in attendance will be expected to sign in as well as keep their distance from one another.

"We're going to be asking for physical distancing in the stands. We will need to document the people who are there so we can have a list not only of the players and coaches who are there but also the spectators. Just in case if a case of COVID did break out, we would be able to help with the contact tracing."

Hemingway says a lot has gone into making this season possible.

"It's only been a couple of weeks since we knew we could go forward with the season and that has meant a lot of extra work. You know, getting teams together, getting coaches together, getting our COVID safety kits and sanitizer together. So everybody on our board has put in a lot of extra time to make this happen and I just want to thank all of them."

The season may be starting 2 months later than usual, but they are still planning on playing close to the same number of games as there would be in a regular season.
