The fourth edition of the Spartans Basketball Club's Premier Prairie Classic was a hit over the weekend.

Moose Jaw played host to 57 teams from Saskatchewan and Alberta while 90 games hit the floor across four schools during the tournament.

"Great weekend, lots of teams in town and hats off to Rhona [Johnson] and all the organization that she does to get that thing going. It's a huge tournament, she does a great job and it's great for our kids in this community," said Spartans coach Ryan Boughen.

The local teams performed well at the tournament, winning three gold medals and a medal in six total divisions.

The Spartans picked up gold in the Under-17 Tier 1 and Under-13 boys divisions as well as the Under-17 Tier 2 girls division.

Boughen said the U17 boys Spartans, who held off the Queen City Hornets for an 83-79 win in the final, have shown a lot of growth over the course of the early season.

"That game was a really good example of how much better we've gotten over this short six-eight weeks," said Boughen. "We played the Hornets earlier in Saskatoon and they beat us, but the kids kept working at it, so it was a strong finish for us."

The U13 boys Spartans squared off with the Queen City Raiders in their championship game, pulling out a 73-64 win to take gold. They had beat the Moose Jaw Ballers, 78-27, in the semifinal.

Boughen said it was an exciting win for the young team, "It was pretty tense for them and we kept saying, 'Keep playing guys and have some fun with it' and it just worked out," he said.

"We had our first game of the year on Thursday night before the tournament started as an exhibition game, so we weren't really sure going in. They had a good time with it and enjoyed the experience."

The U17 girls Spartans also came with a first place finish in Tier 2, while the Ballers were second and the Spartans were third in the U15 boys division.

The U13 girls Spartans picked up a silver medal, falling to the Regina Warriors in the final, and the U11 boys Spartans captured silver with a loss to the Saskatoon Greenwave United in the final.
