The playoffs opened in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Basketball League on Tuesday night.

The Vanier Spirits secured a spot in the semifinals with a 52-29 win over the Assiniboia Rockets in the girls' quarter-final on Tuesday.

Maurissa Metz had 12 points in the win for the Spirits, while Gracie Bzdel picked up 11. Jewellyn McDonald added eight points as well.

Vanier used a big first quarter to set themselves up in a good position early as they led Assiniboia, 16-6, after one. The Spirits extended that lead to 14 points by halftime, leading 30-16 at the break.

The Spirits continued their strong play in the second half to seal the win.

Maura Belles scored a game-high 14 points in the loss for the Rockets.

Vanier will now face the 8-0 Peacock Toilers in the semifinals next Tuesday.

The senior boys' quarter-final goes on Wednesday night with the fourth place B.C.A. Cougars hosting the fifth place Rockets at 8 p.m.
