If the Peacock Toilers and Vanier Spirits meet in the city final in high school senior girls volleyball this year, as they just might when it’s all said and done, it might not be possible to match the intensity on the court that was displayed Tuesday night.

The Spirits went up two sets to none on the Toilers, who fought back and won the next two, bringing it to a decisive fifth set.

Vanier won three long sets to two (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 26-28, 16-14).

“I just said, (don’t play) to survive, play to win,” said Spirits head coach Brad Hennenfent. “Just go hard. If you hit it out, you hit it out, and if they block you, they block you. But I don’t want to be tipping and rolling if we don’t have to. If we can rip and go hard, let’s do it.”

It truly had the feeling that it could have gone either way between the Toilers and defending city champion Spirits.

“When we went up two straight, I told the girls they’re not done,” Hennenfent said. “They’re going to come back and they’re going to fight. It was just a great game to be at in September.”

In the other game in the girls division, the B.C.A. Cougars edged the Cornerstone Falcons 3-to-2.

In the senior boys division games, Cornerstone got the better of Central in five sets, Avonlea won three sets to none over Riverview/Mortlach and the Vanier boys won in straight sets at B.C.A.

The league resumes Tuesday night when, in the boys division, Cornerstone is at Riverview, Peacock is at Vanier and Central is at Avonlea. In the girls division, Central is at Peacock and Vanier is at B.C.A.
