For some it was their first competition and the Moose Jaw Aqua Otters are coming away very pleased with how everyone performed earlier this month in Regina.

The local synchronized swimming team travelled to the Queen City for the Sadie Caulder Knight synchro competition and they posted a pair of team first place finishes.

"I was really proud of all of them, especially the recreationals because this was their first competition of the year, they only go to one every year," said coach Alysa Beattie.

The Aqua Otters' 10-and-under limited team came away with gold in the championship. The team finished second in the routine portion and then Peyton Klemenz picked up a second place finish in figures. Ava Rosso finished fourth for that team in figures, while Emily Boese and Macey Binsfeld were tied for 21st.

The 11-12 limited and 13-15 limited teams combined to swim together in the 13-15 routine and came away with top spot. In figures, Lila Wilk was second in the 11-12, Callie Klemenz came in fourth and Anna Thorn was fifth.

In 13-15 figures, Abbi Allan was second and Lara Shkuratoff came in third.

The Aqua Otters' competitive team in the 13-15 age group finished in fifth place overall in the championship. In figures, Taiya Carpentier was 15th, Claire Woloschuk was 21st, Emma-Leigh Vancoughnett came in 32nd and Tatiana Vickaryous finished 47th.

With it being the only meet of the year for the recreation swimmers, Beattie said they really enjoyed their time in the pool at the competition, "That was pretty neat to pick up the first place finishes, the girls were pretty excited," she said.

The season is wrapping up for the synchro team and Beattie said she's really proud of the work that everyone of their swimmers has put in this year.

"They've really grown, a lot of the eight-and-under girls (who don't go to competitions) came in and struggled swimming in the deep end on their own and now they're doing some synchro figures and they look great, it all came together," said Beattie.

The Aqua Otters will be hosting a year-end show coming up on Sunday at the Kinsmen Sportsplex from 5-7 p.m. Any kids aged five-and-older that are interested in the sport, can bring a swimsuit to the show and try it out afterwards as well.
