The Moose Jaw Kinsmen Flying Fins are back in the pool to kick off their 2015-16 season.

Things started off on the right foot for the Flying Fins over the past couple of weekends as they attended meets in Yorkton and Saskatoon.

The local team saw its swimmers post 85-percent and 83-percent personal bests at the Yorkton Ice Breaker and Saskatoon Goldfin Invitational meets, respectively.

“It was a pleasant surprise to be honest with you,” said head coach Gord Shields. “This was basically the first meet of the year for most of them and to do 85, 83, percent lifetime bests was great for the start of the season.”

Having such a strong start to the season for the team is really exciting for Shields.

“All we've been doing so far is technical work, we've been doing technical work and dry land, just to get in shape for the core and things like that, but the whole emphasis has been on technique,” he said.

“Come November we'll start pumping up the volume a little bit and come December, I expect we'll see some more great swims.”

In Yorkton, Rainer Olson was named the male swimmer of the meet after posting personal best times in five out of six events, while also coming in first in four and second in two.

Jacinta Grill was the female wimmer of the meet in Yorkton as she put up 100-percent personal best times in her swims and claimed three second place finishes, a third and two fourths.

In Saskatoon, Elizabeth Murphy was the top female swimmer for the club claiming a personal best time in eight out of nine events, while Austin Lin was the male swimmer of the meet with all personal best times in 13 different events. He also picked up one first, five seconds and two fourth place finishes.

“Austin and Harry Lin, they're two brothers, they both swam great, and Elizabeth had some really outstanding swims,” said Shields.

The Flying Fins are off until November 21-22 when they head into Regina for a meet. The next meets after that will come in December when they travel to Winnipeg and Saskatoon to wrap up the first cycle of meets.
