Whether it's cold and rainy or warm and sunny, like Wednesday, it doesn’t matter to Cornerstone's Aliyah Block, she still breaks records.

With the Moose Jaw Invitational and City Championship records under her belt already, Block continued her rewriting of the midget girls shot put records on Wednesday at Gutheridge Field during the South Central District Track-and-Field Championship.

She came within a metre of breaking the discus record as well.

"I was really hoping to break both records because I have broken both records in practice but a lot of it is just certain times you throw better, sometimes it doesn't happen," said Block.

Block's throw of 11.62 metres shattered the shot put record of 10.38 metres set by Tessa Neufeld in 2017. She was just 0.65 metres away from the discus record.

There's one more record to go for Block as she looks to complete the sweep at provincials here Moose Jaw next weekend. Her throw at Districts would have beaten the mark set last year by Saskatoon Bethlehem's Bryn Bohmann.

Block said she feels like it's a possibility, "It all depends on the day, but I think I have a really good chance," she said. "I really like new experiences, so when its something fresh and new, I get more excited about it and I just unconsciously throw better, so provincials will get me pumped up and I'll hopefully throw better."

Having provincials at home in Moose Jaw will be a bonus as well.

"There are a few landmarks that are real helpful, there's a poll at the end of the field that I aim for and at shot put, there's a circle right behind the circle that is really helpful to look at," said Block.

There were two other records broken during the day as Moose Jaw set a new record in the midget girls 4x100-metre race with a time of 53.3 seconds, which was one second quicker than the old record, which had stood since 1976.

Vanier's Maurissa Metz also tied the junior girls 80-metre hurdles record with a time of 12.7 seconds.

Central's McGillis Dominates Long Distance

Kal McGillis has been getting stronger all season and the Central runner put his work on display during a dominating performance at the district championship.

McGillis won gold in the senior boys 800, 1,500 and 3,000-metre races on Wednesday.

"I feel good, I feel confident going into the 3K at provincials, I'm hoping to get top three," said McGillis.

"I've gotten a lot better since last year, so going into provincials is going to look a lot better than any year. It's my last year, go out hard."

McGillis' 30 points from his three gold medal wins were enough to earn him the senior boys aggregate win as well, beating out Vanier's Cooper Cole by two points.

Showdown in Senior High Jump

Central's Riley Seaborn and Caronport's Tanner Funk pushed each other to new heights in senior boys high jump during Wednesday's district championship.

Seaborn ended up edging Funk by clearing 1.84 metres on his final attempt.

The Cyclones senior said Funk gave him a good test, "He's good competition, it's nice to have good competition and every week you can get better and we can fight for first place against each other," he said.

Seaborn hit a new personal best with his jump. "It was us pushing each other and the crowd was getting into it, so that helped," he said.

Funk's best jump of 1.81 metres, which also came on his final attempt, set a personal best for him.

"Adrenaline and mental focus helped, just getting ready and imaging going over the bar," said Funk.

The two athletes will have another chance to square off when they compete at the provincial championship next weekend at Gutheridge Field.

"This is my first time at provincials for track, so super excited," said Seaborn.
