The Skylar Ackerman rink was sporting some new green jackets on Sunday. The Moose Jaw curling team won the 2018 Saskatchewan Under-18 Curling Championship with a perfect weekend on the pebbled ice in Swift Current.

The weekend culminated with a 4-3 win over Team Zankl out of Regina on Sunday morning to capture the provincial title.

“We're over the moon excited, we couldn't have had a better weekend together and there's no better way to top it off than with the gold medal and a trip to New Brunswick,” said Ackerman after their provincial championship win.

It’s been a pretty incredible season for the Ackerman rink, which also includes Madison Johnson at third, Chantel Hoag at second and Samantha McLaren at lead. They picked up a silver medal at the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games last month and now have a provincial title to go along with it.

Ackerman said it's been a year to remember for them and to finish it off with a provincial championship is the perfect end.

“The green jacket means everything to me, I've been wanting one since as long as I can remember and now to finally have it, it's unreal,” she said.

The team was unbeatable over the four days at provincials, posting a 7-0 record to roll to the championship.

It started with a 6-4 win over Team Fahl on Thursday night. The Ackerman rink then beat Team Zankl for the first time, 5-3, on Friday afternoon before following that up with a 7-5 win over Team Kleiter in the 'A' final on Friday night.

Now in the 'B' event, the Ackerman rink scored a 9-3 win over Team Haupstein before knocking off Team Zankl for a second time, 6-2, in the 'B' final on Saturday afternoon.

Ackerman had another showdown with Team Kleiter on Saturday night in the 'C' semifinal and knocked them off 12-2 to set up another meeting with Team Zankl in the 'C' final, which Ackerman won 4-3 to secure the provincial title.

“We improved each and every game and we had great communication the whole time and we got a really good hang of the ice, so it was awesome,” said Ackerman.

“The games were closer than the scoreboard showed sometimes, they were definitely pretty stressful, but our team pulled together at the right times and we made our shots to make it a great weekend.”

The team will now turn their focus to the U18 National Championship, which will be held in Saint Andrews, N.B. from Apr. 9-14.

“We just need to keep building on how we did this week and we'll be really successful at nationals if we can do that,” she said.

In the men's division at provincials, the Brett Behm rink out of Moose Jaw lost out in the 'C' event semifinal on Saturday night as they posted a 3-3 record over the course of the weekend.

The Niki Stark rink out of Moose Jaw also competed in the Open Division and posted a 1-3 record, losing out on Saturday morning.
