The Moose Jaw Warriors erased a three-goal third-period deficit to come from behind and beat the Regina Pats 4-3 in a shootout Monday at the Subway WHL Hub.

Throughout the opening period, the Warriors were quick up the ice and aggressive on the fore-check which led to an 11-5 advantage on the shot clock, but unfortunately, the game remained scoreless through twenty minutes.

The game remained scoreless until the 14:43 mark of the second period.

Regina dug the puck away from the Warriors and then slid it to Parker Berge at the blueline.  He was able to get a shot away that went off a Warriors stick and past goalie Brett Mirwald.

34 seconds later, again Regina won a wall battle in the Moose Jaw zone.  They played the puck to the point for Layton Feist, who was able to get a shot through traffic to give the Pats a two-goal lead.

Five minutes into the third period, Regina moved quickly up the ice and finished the rush with a goal from Ryker Evans to extend their lead.

Moose Jaw did not quit and continued to battle.

At 12:34, they jammed the puck towards the Regina net.  Goalie Mathew Kieper was not able to cover the puck which allowed Kade Runke to ram in his first goal of the season to get the Warriors on the board.

23 seconds later, Bryden Kiesman poked the puck away from the Pats inside the neutral zone.  Josh Hoekstra then took a pass and drove to the high slot in the Regina zone, where he let a bullet of a shot go that beat Kieper blocker side to pull Moose Jaw to within one.

Inside the final minute of regulation, the Warriors pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, and the gamble paid off.

With 16 seconds left in the game, the puck came to Eric Alarie on the left side of the net.  He drove to the bottom of the circle where he lifted a backhand shot past the Regina goalie, his team-leading eighth of the season tied the game at three.

Both teams generated opportunities in overtime but neither finished the game.

In the opening round of the shootout, both teams were not able to score.  In the second round, 15-year-old Brayden Yager and Connor Bedard both scored.  Then in the third round, both teams were stopped again.

Regina’s Zack Smith opened the fourth round but was stopped by goalie Brett Mirwald.  That set the stage for Warriors 16-year Jagger Firkus.  The Irma, Alberta product came down on Kieper and snapped a shot past his blocker, finishing the comeback, and handing the Warriors a 4-3 win.

Brett Mirwald finished with 29 saves in regulation and overtime and then had another three in the shootout.

Moose Jaw outshot Regina 39-32, they were 0-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
