The Peacock Toilers haven't been tested much this season, but they received a good fight from the Cornerstone Falcons on Wednesday night.

The Falcons took the first set off the Toilers in their High School Senior Boys Volleyball match-up, before Peacock battled back to win the next three sets and the game (20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18).

“They had a little turkey grease on their hands, ever since Thanksgiving, practices have been slow and everything has been off,” said Peacock head coach Martin Holzer.

“All the credit to Cornerstone, they played well, and we were able to slowly able to battle back and once we got that first win, the guys started hitting and calling for the ball and it turned around in the last two sets.”

The loss was a tough one for Cornerstone to stomach as they appeared on the verge of taking the second set off Peacock, but were called for an illegal rotation, had two points taken off the board and went from being a point away from winning, to down.

The Falcons never seemed to recover from that.

“On a substitution we got out of rotation and we ended up losing a couple of points and that really hurt us and hurt our momentum,” said Cornerstone head coach Lee Behrns.

Coming into the game, Peacock was undefeated on the year and hadn't dropped a set in league play. The Falcons were able to stick to their game plan early and took the first set off the Toilers.

“We played simple and limited our mistakes, we didn't play the most aggressive volleyball, but we found ourselves up in the match,” said Behrns. “We wanted to just keep it simple and keep going.

“Hopefully some of the lessons we learned tonight and some of the calls that were made, we can smarten up and fix those moving forward.”

Facing some adversity was a good test for Peacock as well, according to Holzer.

“We're young across the board, so this is going to do nothing but help us in the long run,” he said. “We're getting into the realm of our tougher tournaments, so the intensity has to pick up and this is a good thing in the long run.”

In other senior boys action on Wednesday night, Central beat Vanier in four sets (25-15, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19), while Caronport also won in four sets over Avonlea (25-10, 14-25, 25-18, 25-21).

There was two senior girls games as well on Wednesday, with Peacock winning in five sets over Rouleau (21-25, 17-25, 25-15, 26-24, 15-10) and Caronport cruised to a straight set win over Central (25-16, 25-20, 25-17).

Peacock will be hosting the annual Moose Jaw Senior Girls Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday this weekend. Six out-of-town teams will be in Moose Jaw to face-off with four local squads. The action starts at 1:00pm on Friday afternoon.
