The Moose Jaw Miller Express and Regina Red Sox were tied 3-3 heading into the seventh inning on Monday night, but that's when things got away from Moose Jaw.

With runners on first and second, Regina’s Antonio Torres was hit by a pitch and charged the mound, which caused the benches to clear, however Torres wasn’t ejected.

The Red Sox would seize control after that situation on their way to a 10-3 win.

“Emotions got pretty high and unfortunately there was a blatant disregarding of a league constitutional by-law and rule, where a player that charges the mound should be ejected,” said Millers head coach Michael Hunt. “During the ensuing ejection for me, emotions were high and we didn’t handle the adversity.”

A bases-loaded walk by Phil Langlois brought around the first run in the seventh for Regina; a sac-fly by Griffin Keller brought in anothe; and then Jordan Schulz cashed in two more with a single before Galen Andrews picked up a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

The damage was done and the Millers couldn’t recover with Regina adding three more runs in the eighth to seal the win.

“We have to take learning moments and we have to take positives from everything, so hopefully we learned that we cannot let things spiral, that we have to control what we can control and move on,” said Hunt.

It was a close battle between two rivals heading into that seventh inning.

After three no-hit innings for both teams to start the game, Regina opened the scoring with three runs in the fourth.

Moose Jaw was able to answer right back in the top of the fifth as catcher Zach Fascia led off the inning with a single; shortstop Joshmar Doran followed it up with a double; and third baseman Lane Harvey loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch.

Fascia and Doran scored on an error and then Harvey came around to tie the game on a sac-fly by centre fielder Travis Able.

Starting pitcher Mitchell Robinson had another strong outing in a no-decision, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk over six innings before giving way to Travis Edgar when things fell apart in the seventh.

“Unfortunately we hung Mitchell Robinson with another no-decision,” said Hunt. “We missed some opportunities early in the game to score some runs, just failed to execute some basic things that we’ve been pretty good at lately.

“It was a 3-3 game, it was a closely contested game and then things just went sideways.”

Edgar took the loss for Moose Jaw.

Andrews allowed one hit over one inning with two strikeouts. D.J. Martinez struggled in the eighth, giving up three runs on two hits and three walks in a 1/3 of an inning.

Arman Lakhani finished off the eighth with one strikeout.

Brendan Hornung was making his first start of the season for Regina, he allowed three runs – two earned – on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one.

Red Sox reliever Ruddy Estrella earned the win with 1 1/3 shutout innings.

With the way that the game ended, Hunt said that he hopes the team uses it as motivation heading into their next game on Tuesday.

“The sun is going to come up tomorrow and baseball will be played,” said Hunt.

The Millers host the Medicine Hat Mavericks on Tuesday night at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
