Team Canada held on for a narrow 3-1 win over Latvia in the quarterfinals at the IIHF Under-18 World Championship in Sweden on Thursday.

Moose Jaw Warriors forward Brayden Tracey assisted on Canada's opening goal by Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Braden Schneider. Warriors defenceman Daemon Hunt was held off the scoresheet in the win.

Canadian captain Peyton Krebs of the Kootenay Ice scored twice in the win for Canada, while Schneider finished with two points and Prince George Cougars goalie Taylor Gauthier made 38 saves in a brilliant performance for Canada.

Team Canada who will now take on host Sweden in the semifinals on Saturday.

In other quarter-final action on Thursday, Yegor Buyalski and Belarus lost 6-0 to Russia, while the United States topped Finland 6-0. Russia and the U.S. will meet in the other semi-final.

The medal games are on Sunday.
