The Moose Jaw U15 A Warriors attended a tournament in Melfort over the weekend. This was the first tournament for the players in almost two years, but despite the layoff, they were able to finish second in the tournament.

“We continue to develop the team-first mindset; the boys are having fun. They work for each other and know they can win. We continue to improve, and I cannot wait to see how the boys translate this success into league play,” said coach Dan Bechard.

On Friday night they won their first game of the season 7-3 over the host Melfort Mustangs. The largest offensive outburst of the year with 7 goals scored led by Nate Lewko with two goals and one assist, Keaton Weinheimer with two goals, and singles from Hayden Bakke, Jaxson Simpkins-Wray and Nick Bechard. Cole Fox with the win in net.

Game two on Saturday afternoon was a tighter 3-2 win against the Martensville Marauders. Led by Jayce Finiack between the pipes, Lewko, Bakke and Tanner Neustaeter scored. Jacoby Webb had two assists and key physical play.

With a 2-0 record, the Warriors found themselves in the final, where they lost 8-2 to a fast, skilled Warman Wildcats team. Bechard and Tyler Allain scored for the Warriors. Cole Fox took the loss in net.

“First off, the team had a lot of fun this weekend. Finishing the tournament with a 2-1 record has the boys playing confident and buying into the team identity,” Bechard said.

“They set another standard for themselves. The coaches and players are looking forward to a couple of good weeks of practice before our home and home with Lumsden the final weekend of November and a busy start to December with 4 games in 6 nights.”
