The Moose Jaw High School Junior Boys Volleyball League crowned two champions on Monday night.

The Vanier Vikings walked away with the Junior Boys Championship, while the Craik Cougars picked up the Junior Varsity Boys Championship to close out the season.

The Junior Varsity Girls Championship goes on Tuesday night at Riverview Collegiate, while the Junior Girls Championship is set for Thursday at Peacock Collegiate.

Vanier Finishes Strong Night with Title

The Vanier Vikings entered Monday’s Junior Boys Volleyball Playoffs as the lowest seed, but that didn’t stop them from capturing the title.

The Vikings won in two straight sets (25-18, 25-23) over the Central Cyclones in the final.

That came after Vanier upset the first place Peacock Toilers in three sets (25-22, 25-27, 15-13) in the semifinal to open the night.

"They were all really close games and we fought hard, it got close here and there, but we kept battling through and we pulled out in front," said Vanier grade 10 Josh Auger.

Coming off their big upset in the semifinal, the Vikings were fired up for the final against Central. Auger said their energy translated into strong play on the court.

"We always had positive energy out there, we weren’t always loud, but we were always positive, picking each other up," said Auger.

The Vikings were a young team coming into the season, but Auger said that they grew throughout the year and showed what they’re capable of on Monday night.

"We only had three returning players from last year, but it ended up working out pretty good," he said. "The grade 9s really showed up and the new grade 10s that had never played in their life, I was very impressed."

The other semifinal saw the Cyclones edge the Cornerstone Falcons in three sets (25-27, 25-18, 15-13).

Cougars Capture JV Boys Championship

The Craik Cougars were given a good test by the Riverview/Mortlach Royals in the Moose Jaw High School Junior Varsity Boys Volleyball League’s championship game on Monday night.

The first place Cougars pulled off the win over the host Royals in three sets (25-23, 16-25, 15-10) to capture the title.

The Royals pulled off the upset of the second place Central Butte/Eyebrow Bulldogs, winning in two sets (26-24, 25-18), in the semifinal.

They carried the momentum over from that win into the final to give the Cougars a good test early on.

Once Craik found their groove, they were able to settle in for the win.

"We played better in the third, not so good in the first two, but we came back strong in the third," said Craik’s Cody Vibert.

Riverview/Mortlach had all the momentum rolling their direction during the second set, but Vibert said they were able to reset quickly in-between sets to secure the title.

"We called timeout, talked hard and cheered up the boys," he said.

The Cougars played on Monday with just five players and normally only have one substitution, Vibert said, "It’s pretty fun."
