After losing their season opener, the Vanier Spirits have put together back-to-back strong performances after Tuesday night's three-set win over the Falcons at Cornerstone Christian School.

Tuesday's sweep improves the Spirits' record to 2-1 in league play this season and it was their second straight set win in a row.

"We've been working pretty hard in practice, so it's nice to see it all coming together out on the court," said Vanier captain Jenna Meili.

The Spirits took the first set, 25-14, and then secured a 25-16 win in the second set. Vanier continued their strong play in the third set, jumping out to a big lead before finishing off Cornerstone with a 25-15 win.

"Our serving was really consistent and our passing was pretty good as well," said Meili.

The Falcons drop to 0-3 on the season with the loss, but Falcons coach Lee Behrns said they’re making progress, "Obviously we're the smallest team in the league and the youngest by far with five grade nines and two grade 10s and only two grade 12s, but we come out each day and we battle," said Behrns.

Cornerstone went 6-0 over the weekend to win the Rouleau Tournament. Behrns said that was a result of playing the tough competition that they face in the Moose Jaw league.

"We use the league to hone our skills and it's way more beneficial playing in the senior league. We'll take our lumps some days and win some sets some days too," he said.

"I can't teach them these things in practice, the different tip coverage formations and how to anticipate hits, you can't do that in practice, so playing Vanier, they're hitting from all over."

The Spirits return to the court on Thursday to host the Central Cyclones, while the Falcons will head over to Peacock to go up against the Toilers.

In other senior girls action from Tuesday, the Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars rolled to a three-set win (25-20, 25-13, 25-17) over Central.

There were three boys games on Tuesday as well, the Vanier Vikings won in four sets (18-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-15) over Cornerstone; Central swept B.C.A. in three sets (25-11, 25-13, 25-23) and the Avonlea Eagles knocked off Peacock in four sets (25-23, 25-19, 13-25, 25-18).
