The two remaining undefeated teams in the Moose Jaw Minor Football League’s Peewee Division played a thriller on Tuesday night at Elks Field.

Tyler Franks scored four touchdowns for the Assiniboia Rockets as they held on for a 28-27 win over the Moose Jaw Vikings in a match-up of undefeated teams.

Vikings running back Tayden Hardwicke ran three touchdowns, while fellow back Josh Johnson scored once in the loss.

"At the start, we started really slow, since the last game, we were thinking, 'Oh, we’re pretty good,' and then the first half came and (we were down) 14 points and then we fixed everything in the second half and just missed by a point," Johnson after the game.

The Vikings are now 3-1 this season, while the Rockets improve to 4-0.

All four of Franks' touchdowns came in the first half as the Rockets built up a 28-14 lead at halftime. Franks scored on four straight runs of 60, 65, 50 and five yards, but he was held to just ten yards in the second half as the Vikings tightened up defensively.

The Vikings battled their way back in the second half, scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a five-yard score from Hardwicke with just seconds left in the game, which cut the lead to one. The convert attempt for the Vikings fell incomplete, giving them their first loss of the season.

"Our defence played really good, they didn't let them get a single point (in the second half), which is good," said Johnson.

Despite coming out with a loss, Johnson added that feel they did a lot well in the game.

"We had good blocks on offence, good hits, and nice passes," said Johnson. "We've just got to practice more and get out of the gate, not start off slow."

Hardwicke finished with 184 yards rushing, while Johnson had 115 yards rushing and 22 yards receiving.

The Vikings will look to bounce back when they finish their regular season on Oct. 5 against the Moose Jaw Mustangs, while Rockets host the Weyburn Ravens on Saturday.

In other action on Tuesday, the Mustangs won their first game of the season with a 23-12 triumph over the Moose Jaw Lions at Elks Field.
