A golden start for the Thunder Creek Volleyball Club.

The new local volleyball club sent its 14-and-under women’s team to its first ever tournament in Regina over the weekend and they walked away with gold in a stellar first showing.

“It went beyond my expectations, we were really happy to win it,” said Coach Krista Caplette. “It took us a little to get the lineups that we wanted, figure out who works well together, who works well in what position and once we found the line-ups that clicked, it worked really well for us.”

The TCVC went 2-1 during round round play and then upset the host and top ranked QCVC Royal Raven Purple in the final on Saturday, winning in three sets.

The club is in its first season of operation and had been practicing for the past month to prepare for the tournament. Caplette said it was nice to see them come together so quickly.

“Since they’re all from different schools, they don’t really know how each other plays yet, so some of them would wait for someone else to play the ball, but once we got them talking and they knew who would go for it, it helped us a lot,” she said.

“They also served really well, we were really impressed with their serving. We didn’t miss very many and they were hard, aggressive serves too, so that got us quite a bit of points.”

The weekend was without a doubt a good starting point for the club. Caplette said that they need to continue building off of it.

“It’s hard to really know how much confidence it gave them with 14-year-old girls, but I’m hoping over the month this will carry over to our next practices and games,” she said.

The club is hoping to host their own tournament next month as well as head to another.
