A young Moose Jaw Warriors team learned a hard lesson on Saturday night at Mosaic Place, as they fell 5-4 in overtime to the Prince Albert Raiders.

The Warriors and Raiders put together an exciting opening 20 minutes with plenty of chances at both ends of the ice. Moose Jaw used their speed and hard work to generate scoring opportunities on top of Raiders goalie Donovan Buskey.

It was the Raiders that got on the board first when Sergei Sapego's point shot found its way through from the point on the power play to make it 1-0 after one.

Just 19 seconds into the second period, the Warriors dug the puck out of the Raiders left corner and set up Justin Almeida between the circles, where he snapped in his second goal of the year to tie the game at one.

Just over a minute later, at 1:41, the Warriors went back on the attack and pushed the puck towards the Prince Albert net with 17-year-old rookie Brayden Tracey lifting a backhand from the left side of the Raiders crease for his first WHL goal, which gave Moose Jaw a 2-1 lead.

Tracey extended the Warriors lead with 1:08 left in the second period when he drove to the right goal line and tossed the puck off a Raiders skate and over the goal line.

Moose Jaw's momentum continued two minutes into the third period when Daniil Stepanov broke up a Raiders clearing attempt inside their zone and then moved the puck over to Yegor Buyalski, whose shot from between the circles ricocheted off a Raiders' defender and beat Buskey to make it 4-1.

Down by three, the Raiders started to play hard and desperate hockey, which led to some Moose Jaw mistakes and Prince Albert chances.

At 13:48, Aliaksei Protas came down the Warriors' left-wall and snapped a shot over Adam Evanoff to pull the Raiders to within two.

Then at 17:28, the Warriors missed a defensive assignment inside their zone, which led to the Raiders finding Justin Nachbaur all by himself on the side of the left crease where he made it a one-goal game.

Just 63 seconds later, the Raiders looked to come out of their zone, a Moose Jaw defenceman missed a hit on Parker Kelly, which allowed him to lead an odd-man rush up the ice that ended with a game-tying goal.

Only 1:35 into overtime, Spencer Moe led a rush across the Warriors' line and then set up Kelly on the left wing where he scored the game-winning goal.

Tracey led the Warriors with two goals and three points, Almeida had one goal and two points, and Adam Evanoff made 34 saves in the loss.

Prince Albert outshot the Warriors 16-3 in the third period and 39-15 overall. Moose Jaw was 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Warriors weekend continues on Sunday with a short trip into Regina for their first meeting of the season against the Pats. Catch all the action on Country 100 starting at 3:40 p.m. from the Brandt Centre.
