A third period come back by the Moose Jaw Warriors fell just short on Saturday night, as they lost 4-3 in overtime to the Regina Pats on Halloween at Mosaic Place.

Brett Howden scored twice late in the third period and captain Brayden Point added the game-tying goal with just 43 seconds to go as Moose Jaw fought back from a 3-0 deficit.

Despite the comeback, the Warriors couldn't come away with the win as Chase Harrison scored for Regina just 13 seconds into overtime to give them the win over their rivals.

The teams exchanged opportunities throughout the first period, Moose Jaw outshot the Pats 14-11 in the frame, but goalie Tyler Brown made several dramatic saves to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.

Regina’s fore-check was aggressive in the late stages as they negated clearing opportunities for the Warriors, which resulted in extra time in the attacking zone and produced goals from Colton Kroeker and Adam Brooks, giving the Pats a two-goal lead going to the intermission.

The Warriors continued to create quality scoring opportunities throughout the second period, but once again they weren’t able to edge the puck past the goal line.  Instead, the Pats were able to notch a shorthanded goal from Austin Wagner just past the eight-minute mark, extending their lead to 3-0 heading to the third period.

Late in the second period, Pats 20-year-old Aaron Macklin was given a major and game misconduct for a high hit on Jayden Halbgewachs, resulting in a lengthy Warriors power play that carried over to the third period.

Moose Jaw wasn’t able to convert on their power play and it took them to the last half of the third period before they found the scoreboard.

At 11:12, Nikita Popugaev tossed the puck from the right circle towards the net where Howden flipped it over goalie Tyler Brown for his seventh of the season.

With their net empty in the final four minutes, the Warriors were on the attack.  Howden scored his second of the game with just over two minutes to go in the game and then he set up Point in front of the Pats net, who tipped in the pass for the game-tying goal.

With momentum in their favour headed to overtime, the Warriors weren’t able to ride the wave.

Wagner came down the Moose Jaw right boards, he shot the puck towards the net where Harrison was able to get his stick on the puck, deflecting it past goalie Brody Willms for the game-winning goal.

Howden led the Warriors with two goals and three points, while Point had a goal and two points.  Adam Brooks led Regina with a goal and three points.

Moose Jaw was 0-for-5 on the power play and was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
