In a hard fought battle on Friday night at Enmax Centre in Lethbridge, the Moose Jaw Warriors pulled out a 3-2 overtime win to open their two-game Alberta road trip.

Brayden Burke scored the winner with 2:38 remaining in overtime to lift the Warriors to their fourth straight win and 39th this season. Lethbridge tied the game with 26 seconds remaining when Jadon Joseph beat Warriors goalie Adam Evanoff.

Throughout the first period, the Warriors and the Hurricanes had speed coming up the ice, but defensively, both teams made good plays to break up rushes as they came across the blue-line.

Both teams fore-checks attacked with speed and created turnovers, which resulted in extra attack time, but neither was able to get on the scoreboard as they went into the first intermission.

The hard physical play continued in the second period, as once again the teams pressed hard with aggressive fore-checks.

Just past the midway point, at 11:35, Jayden Halbgewachs fought the puck away from the Hurricanes behind the Lethbridge net, he was able to slide the puck between the circles for Tristin Langan, who put a backhand over the goal line for his 13th of the season.

Just under two minutes later, the Warriors landed on the power play and they were able to convert. Burke controlled the puck inside the right circle and saw that he had bodies driving towards the Lethbridge net, his pass to the top of the crease was deflected by Justin Almeida, who put it over Logan Flodell for his 29th goal of the season.

Lethbridge charged hard in the final moments of the period and with 15 seconds left in the frame, they pushed the puck from the left wall to the Moose Jaw net where Keltie Jeri-Leon was able to lift a shot in to make it a one-goal game.

In the third period, the Warriors outshot the Hurricanes, 9-3, and had chances to add to their lead, but they weren’t able to push the puck past Flodell.

Then with 26 seconds left in regulation and with the Hurricanes’ net empty, they came across the Warriors blue-line and set up Joseph between the circles for a shot that tied the game at two and lifted into overtime.

In the extra period both teams had their chances early. On the first shift, Halbgewachs was stopped on a breakaway, while the Hurricanes had two odd-man rushes, but were denied a shot due to solid defensive plays.

At 2:38 of overtime, a familiar face burned his former team, Kale Clague was able to get a shot on the Lethbridge net from the blue-line and Flodell made a right pad save, but the rebound came right to Burke on the side of the net where he scored his 23rd of the season to end the game for the Warriors.

Burke and Almeida finished with a goal and two points each, while Clague picked up three assists and Evanoff made 19 saves.

Moose Jaw outshot the Hurricanes 5-0 in overtime and 33-21 overall. They finished 1-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

The win improves the Warriors record to 39-7-1-2 and they now have an 11-point lead on Swift Current for top spot in the East Division.
