In their only meeting of the season, the Moose Jaw Warriors and Everett Silvertips battled hard on Friday at Mosaic Place, but unfortunately, the home team came up short falling 2-1 in overtime.

Silvertips defenceman Wyatte Wylie scored the game-winner just 21 seconds into overtime to hand the Warriors their second straight home loss.

In the first period, the Warriors established a quick pace, they moved up the ice smoothly and as they went on the attack, their fore-check was aggressive and won battles in the offensive zone, and with a couple of big hits, they established a steady physical presence.

With four and a half minutes left in the period, new forward Keenan Taphorn raced into the Everett zone and took a shot on the fly on the right wing. The rebound went to the Silvertips’ end-boards where Taphorn fought the puck away from Everett defenders and quickly moved it to the low slot for Justin Almeida, who made the decision to slide the puck to the left side of the Everett crease, where Tristin Langan lifted a shot over goalie Dustin Wolf to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Both teams picked up their physical game in the second period, as they battled hard in all three zones and made it tough for players to get to the net.

With just under four minutes left in the period, the Warriors did a good job on a penalty kill, but the Silvertips kept the pressure on when Moose Jaw got back to even-strength and set up a shot from the point that went off of a Warriors stick and to the back of the Moose Jaw net.

Opportunities were hard to come by throughout the third period, as both teams continued to battle up and down the ice. The Warriors outshot the Silvertips 10-5 in the third but weren’t able to get a go-ahead goal, which sent the game to overtime.

Moose Jaw controlled the puck at the start of the extra frame but wasn’t able to push the puck towards the Everett net. Inside the Silvertips’ zone, they were able to gather a loose puck and quickly moved up the ice on an odd-man rush and finished with Wylie’s winning goal to end the game.

Moose Jaw outshot the Silvertips 22-21. The Warriors were 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
