It's a chance at redemption for one player and a chance to impress for another.

The Moose Jaw Warriors will have two players representing the Western Hockey League next month at the annual CHL Canada-Russia Series.

Captain Brayden Point and goalie Zach Sawchenko were selected to play for Team WHL in the first two games of the annual six-game series across the Canadian Hockey League.

“It's exciting to be recognized as a guy that can play on that team and I'm looking forward to it, but it's good that Zach got the call too,” said Point, who represented the WHL last season at the games in Saskatoon and Brandon.

Point had an assist and scored in the shootout in Team WHL's 3-2 loss to the Russians at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon. Team WHL also lost 3-2 the next night in Brandon, going without a win for only the second time in the history of the series.

While the games are exhibition contests, Point said he's looking forward to getting another crack at the Russians in the series.

“Hopefully we can do better this year,” he said. “It was a tough year last year for us, but hopefully this year we can play hard and get the two wins.”

The two WHL contests will go on Nov. 9 in Kelowna and Nov. 10 in Kamloops.

The games serve as part of the evaluation process for Hockey Canada in selecting the players for the World Junior team camp in December.

Goalie Zach Sawchenko slides across to make a save during the Moose Jaw Warriors meeting with the Edmonton Oil Kings at Mosaic Place in early October.

Point was able to make a strong impression that eventually led to him earning a spot on the team for last year's World Junior Hockey Championship. Sawchenko will be looking to do the same after a strong start to the 2015-16 season with the Warriors.

“Every chance you get to hit the ice is an audition and I get another crack at the pot here, so I'm really looking forward to it,” Sawchenko said.

Hockey Canada is very familiar with what Sawchenko can do in between the pipes as he's won hardware at every level with the national team. However, he didn't earn an invite to the Summer Showcase, which gave him some extra motivation heading into this season.

Now the Calgary native will get a chance to prove to Hockey Canada that he deserves consideration for the national junior team.

“I just need to go out there and compete,” said Sawchenko.

So far this season, Sawchenko has posted a 2.67 goals against average (11th in the WHL) and a .924 save percentage (8th) in seven starts for the Warriors. He's also 5-0-1-1.

“The team has played great in front of me,” he said. “I've got to credit that all to the team, they're making it easy for me to play out there, shots from the outside, taking away rebounds, that's the biggest thing.”

Having faced the Russians at a number of different levels, Sawchenko added that it's still special to battle Canada's biggest international rival.

“Whether it's an exhibition, tournament or a final, it's always something to look forward whenever I play the Russians,” said Sawchenko.

Point added that he's excited for Sawchenko to get this opportunity as well.

“Having Zach there is good for him and hopefully he plays well,” said Point.

“He's a pretty confident guy, he's been to Hockey Canada events before, so he knows what he's doing, but just relax, have fun and play hockey.”
