It took until overtime, but the Moose Jaw U18 AAA Warriors were finally able to put the Notre Dame Hounds away.

The Warriors won 3-2 at Mosaic Place Friday night and an excited Warriors team mobbed the winning power-play unit at the end of it.

“It was a good game. I felt we played a good 60 minutes,” said Warriors head coach Trevor Weisgerber. “Obviously giving up the goal late, taking the penalty, we just kind of broke down on our PK, and that kind of caused the goal.”

Kirk Mullen would get the goal, with the helpers from Wyatt Wilson and Riley Niven. The Warriors were awarded a total of 10 power plays to Notre Dame’s five, which reflected fairly accurately the number of infractions.

But like may Notre Dame teams, it wasn’t an easy encounter. The Hounds stuck with the Warriors, thanks in no small part to goaltender Austin Elliott, who stopped 44 shots in the Notre Dame crease.

“They work hard,” Weisgerber said of Notre Dame. “They compete, they battle and it was a good test. We were happy with the way things ended up… I felt like we pushed the pace a lot of the game but they battled and they’re well-coached.”

Wilson had the other two goals for the Warriors, while Kael DePape stopped 21 of 23 in the Warriors’ net. The Warriors went 2-for-10 with their man advantage.

The storm willing, the Warriors next action is Sunday at Notre Dame. That Hounds team likely won’t be happy with getting a point for an overtime loss and on their big, home ice, are likely to come out flying Sunday.

“We’ll watch some video (Saturday),” he said. “There are some things that we’ll have to change come Sunday. But we have practice (Saturday) afternoon so we’ll touch on that. We’ll watch a little video and we’ll change some things up… and be ready to go for Sunday.”
