Zach Sawchenko made 29 saves on Saturday night, leading the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings in their final game of a three-game Central Division road trip.

Dryden Hunt had a goal and three points in the win for Moose Jaw, while Brayden Point and Marc McNulty added a goal and two points each as the Warriors finished their road trip at 2-1-0-0.

Moose Jaw’s offence went to work early in the period as they opened the game with sustained pressure in the Edmonton zone.  At 4:35, Dryden Hunt danced around a pair of Oil Kings inside the right circle and drove the Oil Kings net where he finished the play with his fifth goal of the season.

The Warriors were all over Edmonton throughout the frame, they had a 10-0 advantage on the shot clock after the first seven minutes, a 12-2 advantage with nine minutes left in the period, and after twenty minutes they had a 15-5 advantage.

Even though their shots weren’t high, the Oil Kings were able to get on the board, with eight minutes left, Tyler Robertson put the puck over the Warriors goal line to even the game at one.

Edmonton started the second period strong and outshot the Warriors 16-11 in the frame, but it was the boys from the Friendly City, who found the back of the net in the middle frame.

With Moose Jaw on the power play at 8:36, the Warriors pushed the puck to the front of the Edmonton net, a scramble ensued with the puck coming to Marc McNulty between the circles.  The recently acquired 20-year-old settled the puck down and put a wrist shot in to the traffic that found the back of the net.

Moose Jaw went up by two three minutes later, just as a penalty expired to Nikita Popugaev, Dryden Hunt flipped the puck up the neutral zone right wall to Popugaev who started an odd man rush up the ice with Brayden Point.  The Russian rookie came down the right wing then fed Point through the middle of the zone where he finished the drive with a shot over the blocker of Patrick Dea.

Edmonton tried desperately to get back in the game throughout the third period as they outshot the Warriors 10-2 in the period.  The Oil Kings pulled their goalie in the final moments and were able to get a goal with 11 seconds left in the game.

That would be as close at Edmonton would come as the Warriors went on to pick up the 3-2 win.

Point’s two-point night was big from a historical standpoint as it moved him into a tie with Jason Bast for third on the Warriors All-Time scoring list with 254 points.  He also sits second in the WHL with nine goals and 18 points in seven games.

Moose Jaw’s record sits at 6-1-1-1 after going 2-1 on their three game road trip to the Central Division, which has them tied with the Brandon Wheat Kings for second in the East Division.

They’ll be back in action on Wednesday when they take on the Swift Current Broncos at Mosaic Place.  Western Nissan Warriors Hockey on Country 100 begins with the Westrum Lumber Timber Mart Pre-Game Show at 6:40pm.
