Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman Daemon Hunt won't be drafted into the NHL this weekend, but the process continues for the star blueliner.

As the 25th ranked North American skater by NHL Central Scouting, he's attracted a lot of attention from a lot of teams in the interview process.

“(There have been discussions with) 20 plus teams, all in Zoom meetings,” Hunt said. “I’m really enjoying the process of everything, talking to GMs and scouts of just about every National Hockey league team. I’m just telling them it was disappointing with the season I had, but I’m a two-way defenceman. I bring leadership, I bring skill, I’m pretty much a threat all over the ice when I’m on my game...”

No date has been set for the 2020 draft, which would have taken place in Montreal but will likely be held virtually after the NHL season is over.

The 2019-2020 season didn’t go according to plan for Hunt. It ended several games early due to the pandemic, and Hunt missed a big chunk of the season due to an arm injury sustained by a skate.

“I’ve recovered 100 percent,” he said. “Honestly now, it’s just a nice big scar on my arm. But other than that, I’m really excited for the season to start. The season I just had was really disappointing. It wasn’t the season I wanted but it’s out of my control, so I’m really excited for a fresh start.”

Hunt completed the season with 15 assists in 28 games. As a 16-year-old rookie the season before, he scored seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 57 games.

Hunt said it’s been difficult because of the pandemic to be able to find ice time, but he’s hoping to skate again soon.
