We're just over a week away from Moose Jaw Warriors training camp, but hockey will be back on the ice at Mosaic Place next week.

The Warriors will be hosting the team's sixth annual Kids Camp in downtown Moose Jaw from Monday-Friday.

Warriors assistant coach Mark O'Leary -- who runs the camp with assistant coach Scott King as well as a handful of players -- said he's excited to be running the camp again this year.

"Every year we've built it into something that the kids get a lot of good stuff out of it and it’s an exciting time for our players, who are at the start of a new season, and we're looking forward to it," said O'Leary, who is coming off a coaching stint with Hockey Canada at the Under-17 Summer Development Camp next month.

Registration is still open for the camp. Kids from ages 5-13 can lace up their skates at the camp and they will be separated into three age groups: Group Rielly (5-7), Group Brouwer (8-10), and Group Point (11-13).

There is also the Elite Conditioning Camp component as well, which is open to bantam and midget aged players. It focuses on preparing the players for the upcoming season.

O'Leary said they work to keep the camp fresh for the players that are coming back each year.

"That's part of being a coach, you have to evolve and look for fresh new ideas," he said. "The experience that I got with Hockey Canada this year certainly has given me some new ideas, working with the skills coaches there, they have good progressions for any age group.

"Scott King takes the skills sessions pretty seriously and he's another guy that stays current and between the two of us, we'll have a lot of new ideas for the kids."

With the Kids Camp being just before the start of the season, the focus is on getting the kids back up to speed before they hit the ice for games.

The players will receive two hours of ice time per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

"We don't want to stray away too far from the fundamentals, it's about having a puck on your stick and being comfortable with it and it’s doing different things with passing and shooting, so it starts there," said O'Leary.

"There's also lots of time to have fun as well, just being comfortable on your skates and doing different things, like playing soccer on the ice or having races."

A number of Warrior players will be serving as coaches at the camp, giving the young kids a chance to spend the week with some of their favourite players.

This year, Tate Popple, Tyler Smithies, Brecon Wood and goalie Jackson Berry will be helping with the camp this year, as well as the Warriors' two import draft picks from June, Danill Stepanov and Yegor Buyalski.

"The kids will have lots of interaction," said O'Leary.
